As the name suggests, a Translation Memory (TM) is a memory tool for translations. A TM only stores translations created by a human translator. No machine translations are stored! The system only stores what the translator inputs and defines as correct, it cannot translate itself and it only serves as an aid for the translator.
You could say that the TM is the electronic memory of a translator. Translations which have been completed by translators are stored for future use. The computer divides the source text into so-called text segments; small and meaningful text units.
During the translation process, each source text segment is assigned the corresponding segment of the target text. These text pairs are stored in the TM. This stored TM file can then be used for any future translations. In a subsequent translation the new source text will be divided into text segments. These segments are compared to the text segments in the existing TM. If the system finds matching text segments, these will be displayed to the translator and he/she can confirm, edit or reject these. If new text segments are translated these are automatically transferred and stored in the TM. So the TM grows from translation to translation, because new segments are continuously added.
In addition to the 100 % matching text segments, corresponding TM translations for similar text segments are also displayed. The variations within the segment are displayed to the translator and he can decide whether to accept, change or reject these.
As you can see, the translator is always the key factor for a high-quality translation. However, a TM helps the translator to concentrate on quality aspects and simultaneously achieve even higher translation volumes.
The advantages of a TM can be summarised as follows:
- Consistent business language
Using translation memory systems in different company areas encourages the development of a consistent business language. This significantly supports the communicative image of your company both internally and externally. This ensures maintenance of a corporate identity.
- Fusing the expertise of a company
As well as developing a consistent business language, the linguistic and technical knowledge of individual employees is established and maintained throughout the company.
- Better quality
Translation memory systems enable the use of company-specific terms and phrases through a variety of documents.
- Increased linguistic consistency
When using several translations or processing various documents, a Translation Memory ensures that the translated texts are consistent. Furthermore, the elaborate and time-consuming verification of linguistic consistency is unnecessary.
- Shorter delivery times
Optimising the translation process saves time. Therefore, the translation performance per unit of time can be increased and the time frame for e.g. a product launch will be significantly reduced.
With our innovative software, it is also possible for Cruz Communications to enter existing translations, which exist in the source and target texts, into the TM or to create a new TM. This process is called “alignment”. The objective of this is to build a Translation Memory database for future translation projects and achieve the greatest possible consistency in relation to documents which are yet to be translated.
Cruz Communications will happily create a concept for the use of Translation Memory systems, in order to optimise the translation process within your company.
